Foo Fighters Thought Mariah Carey’s New Years Eve Performance Was Awesome

Foo Fighters members Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, and Pat Smear were recently interviewed on Jonesy’s Jukebox on our sister station 95.5 KLOS in Los Angeles. During the interview they were discussing why prog rock is a form of punk rock, the conversation shifted to Mariah Carey’s New Years Eve “performance.”

Pat Smear said, “Dude, I was just having this conversation the other day. Somebody said, ‘Your tastes are really, eh!’ I’m like no, it’s all punk rock, prog, it’s all the same.”

Dave Grohl added, “Mariah Carey man, she did not care what anybody thought about that song.”

Pat questioned him, “You saw the New Years Eve thing?”

Taylor said, “That’s punk rock. I’m not even going to sing!”

Dave added, “‘Ever feel like you’ve been cheated? You’ve been cheated!’ That’s what she should have said, drop the mic.”

On December 31, 2016, Carey’s performance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve in Times Square suffered technical difficulties with Carey’s in-ear monitors, resulting in what The New York Times referred to as a “performance train wreck.” Without in-ear auditory feedback, Carey was unable to hear the music and stopped singing while the vocals kept playing, suggesting that she was lip syncing. Carey’s representatives and Dick Clark Productions each denied blame for the incident.
