The Bone is the FM Flagship for the San Francisco 49ers and, like many who saw the breaking news on Sunday night, we were surprised by the announcement that John Lynch would be named as the franchises new general manager.
Lynch played his college football (and baseball) at Stanford. He was a 9-time Pro Bowl Safety and a Super Bowl champion as a member of the 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Lynch played for Tampa Bay from 1993-2003 and then for the Denver Broncos from 2004-2007. Most recently, he’s been a color commentator and an analyst for NFL on Fox and is currently a 2017 finalist to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
This is his first front office job in the National Football League. The hiring of John Lynch as general manager is expected to be followed by Kyle Shanahan being named as the next head coach following Super Bowl LI.

How others around the NFL reacted to the decision…
Just as 49ers gave GM John Lynch 6-year contract, plan is to offer Kyle Shanahan a 6-year deal, per sources. SF wants HC-GM tied together.

The #49ers identified John Lynch weeks ago as a potential GM. He wouldn't go through with it unless it remained secret. Secret no longer.

I'm hearing #49ers GM John Lynch will give assistant GM Tom Gamble chance through the draft to prove he should remain with the organization.

I like John Lynch and hope he succeeds. But every scout/personnel guy who has spent decades trying to climb GM ladder should be disturbed.

Still stunning.
Initial reaction: Will need big personnel help. But Kyle Shanahan is ready. Lynch a dogged Elway type. I like this teaming. https://t.co/gJsCFX74GI— Peter King (@SI_PeterKing) January 30, 2017
