On this week’s episode of Yesterday’s News Today, Baby Huey and Chasta touch on the recent passing of Soundgarden and Audioslave singer songwriter Chris Cornell.

Chris Cornell’s Death

Chris Cornell was born in Seattle in 1964 and, along with other Seattle musicians such as Kurt Cobain, helped put Seattle’s music scene on the map according to The New York Times.

Soundgarden’s musical journeys tended toward the knotty and dark, plunging into off-kilter meters and punctuated by Mr. Cornell’s voice, which could quickly shift from a soulful howl to a gritty growl. Onstage, Mr. Cornell was an imposing figure, flinging his long hair as he presided over mosh pits of fans churning to the band’s metal-tinged riffs. Mr. Cornell was one of four prominent frontmen — along with Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam and Layne Staley of Alice in Chains — who brought Seattle’s sound to the national stage in the late 1980s and 1990s. 

According to Detroit News the family has disputed the allegations that this was a suicide.

In a statement issued by Vicky Cornell and attorney Kirk Pasich, the lawyer said the family needs the results of toxicology tests to be sure what happened to the alternative rocker. “The family believes that if Chris took his life, he did not know what he was doing, and that drugs or other substances may have affected his actions,” Pasich said. In the statement, Vicky Cornell said she spoke to her husband before and after the concert and noticed during the later conversation that he was slurring his words.

Us magazine obtained a statement from Chris’s wife in which she expresses the love that her husband had for his family and his music.

“Chris’s death is a loss that escapes words and has created an emptiness in my heart that will never be filled,” the statement read. “As everyone who knew him commented, Chris was a devoted father and husband. He was my best friend. His world revolved around his family first and of course, his music, second.”
