Our favorite lifeguard TV show from the 90s is back in the form of a movie reboot starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Zac Efron.
Devoted lifeguard Mitch Buchanan butts heads with a brash new recruit. Together, they uncover a local criminal plot that threatens the future of the Bay.
The cast includes:
Dwayne Johnson as Mitch Buchannon
Zac Efron as Matt Brody
Alexandra Daddario as Summer Quinn
Kelly Rohrbach as C.J. Parker
Jon Bass as Ronnie
Ilfenesh Hadera as Stephanie Holden
Priyanka Chopra as Victoria Leeds
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Garner Ellerbee
Rob Huebel as Captain Thorne
Hannibal Buress as Dave the Tech
With the success of 21 Jump Street, the new trend in Hollywood seems to be a resurgence of buddy cop movies, Baywatch takes it to a new level in the form of lifeguards. My initial reaction after seeing the movie was, if you’re a fan of the humor you hear with Lamont and Tonelli, then you will love this movie. If you’re looking for TNA and comedy this movie delivers.
The on screen chemistry between The Rock and Zac Efron was very entertaining and I could totally see them working together on future projects.
There is a lot of dick jokes and there is a heimlich maneuver scene that had us at the screening laughing out loud.
The Rock carries this film and proves once again why he is one Hollywood’s most charismatic actors. But to the rest of the cast’s credit, they all do a great job establishing a family among the lifeguards and I enjoyed the chemistry between everyone.
However, the story was predictable, especially which characters to trust and not to trust. I wish Alexandria Daddario’s character Summer Quinn was given more to do because I felt she was a big stand out in this movie. The movie also felt very long, I thought they could have easily cut 10-15 minutes.
If you need a good laugh during your Memorial Day weekend, then this is the movie for you.
I would rate the film: 6/10
