Baby Huey’s Movie Review For The Mummy

Tom Cruise is back in a reboot of The Mummy franchise and also the official start to Universal Studios’ Dark Universe.

Premise:

Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.”

The cast includes:

Tom Cruise as Nick Morton

Annabelle Walls as Jenny Halsey

Sofia Boutella as Princess Ahmanet/The Mummy

Jake Johnson as Sergeant Chris Vail

Russell Crowe as Henry Jekyll

Going into this movie I was excited the first installment in Universal Studios reboot of their monsters cinematic universe that originally existed between the 1920s through the 1950s, featuring characters and monsters from the black and white movies I grew up watching, however this movie failed to reach me emotionally like their predecessors.

Tom Cruise plays Nick Morton a former U.S. Military officer, who goes around and steals artifacts for profits and in doing so unintentionally unearths the tomb of Princess Ahmanet, unleashing an unspeakable evil. Tom Cruise does a good job of coming off as the confident yet dirt bag type of character and being very charismatic.

When i see Tom Cruise now i just see Tom Cruise, I don’t see the character he is trying to portray. I wonder if they should have casted someone different, maybe more of an unknown or not on the same level of star power. I’m curious how his character will progress in future movies.

I did enjoy learning about The Mummy’s history and the events leading to her creation but for the rest of the characters there isn’t a lot of back story for me to care about their involvement in this movie and what happens to them.

I was very confuse of this is suppose to be a horror movie or action adventure, it was more concentrating on the adventure and over the top action and not so much on the horror or trying to scare he audience. Also, a lot of bad jokes were forced down our throats. I found out there were a lot of writers for this movie which I think explains why the movie seems to go in different directions tone wise. The set pieces were very cool.

Russell Crowe was the highlight of the movie for his portrayal of Dr. Henry Jekyll and he’s the one that actually gives us the backstory of The Mummy and is the key for introducing the audience for the rest of the monster movies however I wanted more from him and setting up what can we expect from future dark universe movies.

Based on Dr. Henry Jekyll talked about in this movie, I wished a solo movie was done about him first to introduce this new monster universe.

For the other characters in this movie, Annabelle Walls as Jenny Halsey didn’t do much, her character didn’t bring a lot to the table, other than being a tour guide for Tom Cruise’s character, she seemed to get in trouble and needed helped being saved more than anything else (kind of funny the weekend before we get a string female role with Wonder Woman and with this movie we get the opposite). Jake Johnson as Sergeant Chris Vail was more annoying than useful as well. Sofia Boutella as Princess Ahmanet/The Mummy was great though.

It’s an alright movie, something you expect released during the summer blockbuster movie season, a lot of action sequences and I hope the direction and story telling improves in future Dark Universe movies.

I would rate the film: 5.5/10
