Focus Features and Universal Studios presents Atomic Blonde.
Premise:
A high-stakes, global action-thriller that takes place in the city of Berlin, on the eve of the Wall’s collapse and the shifting of superpower alliances. Charlize Theron (“Mad Max: Fury Road”) portrays Lorraine Broughton, a top-level spy for MI6, who is dispatched to Berlin to take down a ruthless espionage ring that has just killed an undercover agent for reasons unknown. She is ordered to cooperate with Berlin station chief David Percival (James McAvoy of “X-Men”), and the two form an uneasy alliance, unleashing their full arsenal of skills in pursuing a threat that jeopardizes the West’s entire intelligence operation.
The cast is:
Charlize Theron as Lorraine Broughton, a top-level MI6 field agent.
James McAvoy as David Percival, an eccentric Berlin station chief who becomes an ally of Broughton.
John Goodman as Emmett Kurzfeld, a CIA agent working with MI6.
Sofia Boutella as Delphine Lasalle, an undercover French agent who becomes Lorraine’s lover.
I’ve been a long time fan of Charlize Theron and her work as a badass female lead in many awesome action movie, which is why I was excited to see her do her best James Bond impression as a spy in her new movie Atomic Blonde. Atomic Blonde is based on Antony Johnston and Sam Hart’s 2012 graphic novel The Coldest City. Unfortunately, despite some kick ass fight/car/action scenes, along with a nice pace to the film, the movie’s story fell flat for me.
Atomic Blonde was Directed by David Leitch, who also Directed John Wick and is currently working on Deadpool 2.
Charlize Theron was a great choice for the role of Lorraine Broughton, not only is she sexy but can be tough. Her character comes off as a female version of James Bond meets John Wick.
Based on his previous work, David Leitch can direct amazing, kick ass action scenes and this movie proves that once again. Despite having a very generic spy story, the movie did have a couple memorable action sequences, case in point, a stairwell fight scene that I wished was duplicate more through the movie.
Despite the character Lorraine Broughton coming off as a total badass, I wished her character’s backstory was explained more. The rest of the cast were great selections but were under utilize.
Like any other spy thriller movie, it contains plenty of twists and turns, but most of them were very predictable. I felt like I have seen this story many times over. But I did enjoy the darker and gritty tone.
I was hoping this movie would create a new, fresh take on the spy thriller genre, but lost me because it was style over substance.
I did enjoy the use of the Cold War as the time era for this movie and the fall of the Berlin Wall as a background timer for creating a sense of urgency, which added to the pacing of the film.
I loved the soundtrack, but similar to Suicide Squad, I felt they were forcing in too many hit 80s songs in every scene and came off feeling I was watching one music video to the next.
But I will end with this, if you loved John Wick, you would love this movie as well.
I would rate the film: 6.25/10
Go see Atomic Blonde when the movie hits theaters on Friday, July 28th.
