Baby Huey’s Movie Review For American Made

Universal Pictures presents American Made.

Premise:

Barry Seal, a TWA pilot, is recruited by the CIA to provide reconnaissance on the burgeoning communist threat in Central America and soon finds himself in charge of one of the biggest covert CIA operations in the history of the United States that spawned the birth of the Medellin cartel and eventually almost brought down the Reagan White House with the Iran Contra scandal.

The cast is:

Tom Cruise as Barry Seal

Sarah Wright as Lucy Seal

Domhnall Gleeson as Monty Schafer

Jayma Mays as Dana Sibota

Jesse Plemons as Sheriff Downing

Lola Kirke as Judy Downing

Frank Licari as ATF Special Agent Franks

Jed Rees as Louis Finkle

Caleb Landry Jones as JB

American Made is based on a true story…a very crazy story to be exact. I can’t believe the events in this movie were at one point real life, felt like Forrest Gump, too good to be true. The people and historical events that Barry Seal deals with are so over the top that alone made this movie fun to watch.

To his credit Tom Cruise makes this a fun movie to sit back and enjoy. Tom Cruise portrays Barry Seal as a charismatic anti-hero and comes off very charming and engaging to the audience.

Domhnall Gleeson as Monty Schafer was a very slimey co-star but worked very well with Tom Cruise.

The movie’s pacing was fast but very easy to follow as we follow the characters over the years going from event to event. However, the downside of this pacing is that they don’t go deep in certain subject matter. For example, we never see Barry Seal question himself or show signs of a moral dilemma for his actions, especially ones that involve his family. Barry Seal never feared any repercussions for his behavior. I guess you have to admire his confidence. I would have liked to see the impact of his actions world wide.

Overall very entertaining, well performed, great historical film showcasing the late 70s to mid 80s.

I would rate the film: 7/10

Go see American Made when the movie hits theaters on Friday, September 29th.
