I love this time of year, great weather, outdoor concerts and the official start of the summer blockbuster movie season. Last month kicked things off with Avengers: Infinity War and now the next superhero movie is Deadpool 2. Ryan Reynolds is back with the role he was born to play, Wade Wilson aka Deadpool. After the huge success of 2016’s Deadpool, which was the highest grossing R rated movie of all-time, Fox Studios was very quick to get a sequel out there for the masses.

For anyone that was a fan of the first movie or of the comics will enjoy this movie. When it comes to Deadpool this movie checks off everything fans would want to see: a lot of action, amazing fight choreography/hand to hand combat, violence with blood, fourth wall breaking and a ton of one liners jokes. However, I felt this movie was missing a lot of the heart we experienced in the first movie.

Like any other sequel superhero movie (compared to the first movie which are usually origin stories), we jump right in and see Deadpool in action handling business, fighting and killing a lot of bad people. Don’t worry I won’t reveal any spoilers. The primarily focus of this movie is seeing Deadpool create the X-Force and the introduction of Cable, played by Josh Brolin, into his universe.

The movie is a lot of fun from start to finish and you can easily tell this movie had a higher budget to work with compared to the first one. We see a lot more action, use of CGI and special effects, explosions, fight sequences, etc.

While the first movie was a non traditional love story, the sequel’s theme is about family. I felt the story in the first movie was a lot better than the sequel, mostly from Wade Wilson’s standpoint, in the first movie his love story was a very believable source for his motivation while in this movie I didn’t fully buy into what fueled him getting involved in this new mission. While the first movie did an amazing job of giving the audience an emotional connection to the main characters, Deadpool 2 lacked that, especially with the newer characters. Even when certain characters came together, I wish there was a better job of giving them reasons to be connected.

Ryan Reynolds once again hit it out of the park as Deadpool. Not much new to say other then if you love his delivery and portrayal of Deadpool in the first movie, you will love him in this movie.

For most fans, we have been anxiously waiting for the first ever live action debut of Cable on the big screen, it’s a busy 2018 for Josh Brolin, not only cast to play Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War but also portraying Cable. For Brolin, his main focus of Cable is to be the straight man to Deadpool’s comedy. For you comic book aficionados, you may be a little frustrated with Cable’s origin story. I will say this, they stay true to certain aspects from the comics, while they gloss over other parts. I personally wanted more of his backstory, especially to understand why he looks and acts the way he does. By exploring more of his backstory, it would give the audience a stronger connection to Cable and his interaction with the rest of the cast. Also, in the comics, I hear he is a very powerful mutant, in the movie we see part of his power set, but I wanted more of it. I did Brolin’s gritty and hard nose portrayal of Cable. I hope Fox and Marvel can give Cable more death in the X-Force movie. By the way, I did love the similarities of Cable and The Terminator.

One of the big highlights from the movie was Zazie Beetz as Domino. Her powers involve the ability to manipulate luck. With that type of power, she was able to be in control what was happening around her especially during the intense action moments. Domino was able to avoid getting in danger or seriously hurt, while major destruction was going on around her. This made her scenes a lot of fun to watch as we saw her escape death multiple times. I also wanted more of her. I loved her sass and back and forth with Deadpool.

Unfortunately, TJ Miller’s role this time around was a let down. TJ returned as Deadpool’s sarcastic, wise cracking, joke telling friend Weasel. Weasel’s role was much smaller compared to the first movie, which was a good thing considering not all his jokes hit and some of them were just recycled from the first movie. It kind of felt like he was mailing it in.

Deadpool 2 was a fast paced movie, filled with everything we want to see in a Deadpool movie. When I heard that David Leitch was taking over for Tim Miller as Director, I knew was optimistic with the move. David Leitch was one of the directors from John Wick, which was praised for it’s fight and action sequences and would carry over nicely into a Deadpool movie. With Leitch’s background in stunt work, this movie delivered amazing fight choreography and hand to hand combat, that comes off looking very intense and realistic. However, he over did it with the slow motion effects, you can only use that trick so many times before it loses the same visual results.

Overall, Deadpool fans are going to love this sequel. We get everything we want in a Deadpool movie on a bigger budget and scale. Plus the introduction of new characters that will give Deadpool plenty of material to work with in future Deadpool/X-Force movies. There are some fun cameos. Plus, two amazing post credit scenes. I can’t wait to see it again.

I would rate the film: 8/10
