Kyle Shanahan gives injury updates on Goodwin, Garnett, and others

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers lost four players due to injury in Sunday’s 24-16 loss at Minnesota, but none of them are expected to miss extended time.

According to Kyle Shanahan, these are the injury updates, from his Monday evening press conference:

  • Marquise Goodwin suffered a deep thigh bruise on San Francisco’s third possession. He collided with a Minnesota defender on a crossing route and did not return to the game. He is considered day to day.
  • The right guard spot— San Francisco’s lone position without a clear-cut starter entering training camp— took the hardest hit Sunday. Both starter Mike Person and Joshua Garnett left the game with foot injuries. Shanahan said Person suffered a foot strain and Garnett sustained a dislocated toe. Both will be evaluated later this week. That’s good news for the 49ers, considering Garnett was carted off the field, indicating a potentially serious injury. Rookie Mike McGlinchey played right guard for the first time in his life as a result of the attrition.
  • Erik Magnuson injured his hamstring in the second preseason game. He has not practiced for the past three weeks. Shanahan said he was informed for the first time that Magnuson will be limited in practice this week, though the 49ers head coach does not know Magnuson’s Week 2 availability just yet. “I know he has a chance to be at individual on Wednesday, which I definitely think will be an outside chance as a possibility on Sunday,” Shanahan said. “But it’s about as good of a chance as what I hoped for Garnett, Person, all of them.”
  • Brock Coyle exited the fourth quarter of Sunday’s loss with a head injury. He was later diagnosed with a concussion. He will go through the protocol this week.

Shanahan did not have an explicit update on linebacker Malcolm Smith, who missed the season opener with a hamstring. His Week 2 status will be determined later in the week. He has not played a regular season game with the 49ers since they signed him prior to the 2017 season.
