Nick Bosa, Deebo Samuel agree to rookie deals with 49ers ahead of camp [report]

SANTA CLARA – Nick Bosa, the second overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft, and a crucial part of the 49ers’ future, will not hold out. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Bosa and the 49ers have agreed to a four-year, $33.35 million deal that will see Bosa report to camp, along with the rest of the 49ers, starting Friday (the first real day of camp is Saturday, but reporting starts Friday).

There is not much maneuverability in rookie contracts since the rookie scale was agreed to in the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement back in 2011. Rookies, especially high draft picks, would often hold out for monster deals with high guarantees before playing a down. The rookie scale ended that, but there is still room for negotiation, as was made evident by Nick’s brother, Joey Bosa, when he held out with the then-San Diego Chargers as a rookie.

The main sticking points in negotiations have become offset language (which affects what a player would receive if their fifth-year option is declined, or if the team wants to cut a player in the fourth year; players could effectively be cut in the fourth year and sign with a new team, and be paid by both without offset language) and bonus amounts. In Joey Bosa’s case, he received the largest signing bonus in Chargers history, and the Chargers won out with the offset language after a lengthy holdout.

Schefter’s report confirms there will be no such holdout for the younger Bosa, and Ian Rapoport has confirmed the same will be true for second-round pick Deebo Samuel. According to Rapoport, the 49ers have agreed to terms with the receiver from South Carolina, meaning both of the team’s top two draft picks will be locked in before camp. That was undoubtedly a priority for the 49ers, and something general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan will be happy to have secured when they address media on Friday morning.
