Slim’s Replacement to be Named YOLO, Feature DJ Sets with No Live Music

The iconic San Francisco rock venue Slim’s passed away quietly into the night in March, but now new information has surfaced that will have it rolling in its grave.

The club first opened in 1988 when famous musician Boz Scaggs bought the former restaurant, called the Warehouse, and transformed it into the beloved venue. Slim’s is famous in the Bay Area music scene for hosting small and large bands alike. Gracing its stage became a right of passage for local up-and-coming bands and the perfect spot for larger bands wanting to do secret shows. Artists like Prince and Snoop Dogg made appearances over the years and it was even the set location for Green Day’s Welcome to Paradise music video from 1994.

After 32 years of uniting Bay Area musicians and music lovers alike, the legendary venue will be turned into a nightclub called YOLO.

The new concept will feature mostly Top 40 DJs and no live music according to the new owners Michael Hu and Peter Lin. There will also be a dress code, ropes for lines at the front entrance, and security staff in suits and ties. However, the owners admitted that the new venue will not come to pass for a long time due to coronavirus restrictions of large gatherings.

Chasta sat down with Slim’s operational manager Dennis Juarez a few years ago on the venue’s 30th anniversary to talk about the history of the venue. See the full interviews below.
