In spectacular return to form Green Day played the annual NFL Honors show that marks the start of Super Bowl weekend. This show marked the first time the group has played live in almost a year.
2020 was supposed to be the year of a lot of things, including a world mega tour aptly named the Hella Mega Tour with Weezer and Fall Out Boy, but COVID would put an abrupt end to their ambitious touring schedule. One year later the shows are back on the books, so far, and Green Day is back with instruments in hand.
A three-piece anthology of Green Day’s greatest hits was cut between NFL 2020 season highlights and plenty of fireworks. The set, performed on a stage erected in front of SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, started with their recent hit “Still Breathing,” which led into “Holiday,” and finally “Basket Case.”
However, their absence from the stage didn’t mean they were not making music. Not only did singer Billie Joe Armstrong work with the group to release an album of covers, the musician’s equivalent of making home-made sourdough, he also alluded to a whole new album of originals in the works.
“I’ve been writing a lot,” Armstrong told NME. “I’m always putting something together, whether it’s a full demo in my small studio or just some voice notes on my phone.”
Don’t tell baby Huey, he’ll freak.
