“Highway to Hell” Lyrics Conceptualized on the Toilet

YouTube, @ACDC.

Where do you do your best thinking? Some people take long walks, while others like to sit in silence. Or maybe they put on headphones and listen to music to get the deep thoughts rolling. Whatever works best for your personal style of thinking is what you should stick with.

For Angus Young of AC/DC, sitting on the toilet turned out to be a great place for him to think, as it’s where he came up with the concept and lyrics for their song “Highway to Hell.” Angus came into rehearsals one day in Miami and started playing what would soon be known as the legendary opening guitar part of the song. Malcolm (Young) jumped behind the drums, and they worked out the timing and how the drums would come in.

With the music more or less figured out, Angus said he “…went to the toilet, and then I was in the toilet and I was there and I’m sitting and thinking. And I’m just sitting on the throne more or less. And then I go, ’I think I’ve got it. I’ve got it. I’ve got it. I’ve got the idea in my head.’ And then I came in there and I said, ’I’ve got it. Highway to hell.’ And it was over the chords that we had tried out through a chorus. And he went, ’Yeah, that’ll work.’ And he said, ‘If we spread it out a bit into full singing thing.’ So he came up with a spread of it, ‘(Singing) Highway to hell.’” Read the full story here from nme.com.
