If you’ve been lucky enough in your lifetime to witness Roger Daltrey perform live, then you are well aware of his legendary move: the microphone swing.

The lead singer of The Who went on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this week and explained the history behind his famous on-stage antics. Daltrey said, “I did it out of pure boredom, actually.” He continued, “I’ve got this thing in my hand and I’m fed up with holding it up there [next to my face] so what do I do with it?’ So I kind of threw it and I held onto the cord and of course, it came back. I thought, well that’s kind of interesting. Let’s see what more I can do.”

He also said for the record that the Fallon house band, The Roots, were one of his all-time favorite bands.
