New Director’s Cut of Prince’s Mesmerizing Guitar Solo

Do you remember the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony? If you do, it’s very likely for this reason: the all-star jam at the end of the show with Prince, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood, Dhani Harrison and others. It’s what dreams are made of.

It was a tribute to the late George Harrison from the Beatles, and they covered the classic “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Prince closes the song with a guitar solo that is mind-bending. It sends chills up the spine. It’s smooth. It rocks. It’s fast when it needs to be, and slow when it needs to be. It’s mesmerizing. It’s beautiful. It’s incredible. And he does it so seemingly effortlessly, with an astounded and enthusiastic Dhani Harrison looking on at the living legend as if he can’t believe he’s sharing a stage with this kind of magic.

The clip has been circulating around the internet for over 17 years, but in the past week, we’ve discovered a brand new edit from the man who originally produced it, Joel Gallen. He says, “17 years after this stunning performance by Prince, I finally had the chance to go in and re-edit it slightly — since there were several shots that were bothering me. I got rid of all the dissolves and made them all cuts, and added lots more close-ups of Prince during his solo. I think it’s better now.” Grab the full story here, and enjoy!
