O’ahu’s Infamous ‘Stairway To Heaven’ To Be Torn Down

The Honolulu City Council has voted to remove the popular 3,000-plus stairs known as “Stairway to Heaven” along the Koolau Mountains. Originally built by the U.S. Navy in the 1940s to access a radio station, it has turned into a massive tourist attraction for thousands every year.

The stairs were actually formally closed in 1987, but visitors continued to come despite a threat of a $1,000 fine.

Honolulu’s mayor approved the removal of the stairs, citing concerns for public safety and a lack of infrastructure to support visitors.

Have you hiked ‘Stairway to Heaven’?
