Welcome back to BONE-A-Fide Brews, Boneheads! It’s been a while but I am very excited to bring back this feature to you.
For this week’s episode, I head down to San Carlos on the Peninsula to visit my good friend Alex Porter who is the owner, founder and Head Brewer for Blue Oak Brewing Company. I’ve known Alex for quite some time now and have seen his brewery grow from the back half of the cidery next door to them, to the beautiful taproom you see today right off of the 101. And just the story of how his brewery has grown, the story of how he started it is also very interesting!
Alex’s background actually starts with him working in biochemistry – which would come to play whenever he would brew. As a homebrewer, he would brew traditional styles, of course, while home brewing temperature regulation is a bit of a struggle so he had at least a phenomenal West Coast IPA as he would call it. Once he opened his brewery behind Redwood Coast Cider, he got the chance to brew some amazing pilsners and other lagers, and might I just say that those brews are some of the cleanest I have ever tasted! Of course, to keep up with the demand of the public, he started to brew Hazy IPA’s and sours. With his knowledge of yeast strands and bacteria from his previous day job, Alex has produced some outstanding sour beers.
Currently, Blue Oak Brewing is slowly starting to expand with the addition of a canning line. Alex hopes that with this addition he could hopefully be able to keep profits up especially after multiple shutdowns during this pandemic, but thankfully, with the public and his fans, he has been able to keep his doors open.
As you listen to this episode, be sure to take down the address and as soon as you can, get down to check out some tasty brews from Blue Oak! The taproom is the only place to find his product currently and hopefully in the next couple of months, you’ll be able to see his cans on the store shelves.
Cheers \m/,
