Grandma who Sings Like Stevie Nicks, Janis Joplin Finds Internet Fame

YouTube, @Terri Hafner Riley.

A Massachusetts grandmother whose voice sounds like a mixture of Stevie Nicks and Janis Joplin is taking YouTube by storm.

Terri Hafner Riley says she’s always dreamed of becoming a professional singer. “I’d stand at the top of the stairs and sing out loud,” the 53-year-old says. “It’s silly, but as a kid it’s something you dream about.” However, Riley says after a stint in the Army and getting tied up in her career as a teaching assistant, the dream fell by the waist side.

Now, as a member of a Facebook group called Quarantine Karaoke, Riley says she’s living her dream. “I couldn’t even keep up with the comments,” the Quincy resident says. “Because I like to reply to every single one, at least like their comment, and I just couldn’t keep up. I just kept hearing plung, plung, plung.” Apparently, the comments became too overwhelming for the amateur vocalist — as of Friday, the comments on her cover of “Will You Ever See the Rain” had been turned off.

Are people who become popular on YouTube actual celebrities?
