Rock band manager Herbie Herbert — who’s handled the careers of such acts as Journey and the Steve Miller Band — has died of natural causes in his California home, his family has announced. He was 73 years old.
Herbert, a former protege of legendary rock promoter Bill Graham, started out as a roadie for Santana in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He left Santana with Neil Schon and Greg Rolie in 1973 to form Journey, managing the group during its heyday. He left in 1993 after a reported spat with lead singer Steve Perry.
After parting ways with Journey, Herbert went on to manage acts like Europe, Mr. Big, Roxette and Enuff Z’Nuff, to name a few. “I’ll cherish all the incredible times and trials and tribulations we experienced together,” Schon says of his departed friend. “Herbie was an incredible hands-on manager and fought like a mother fu***r for all of us every step of the way. R.I.P. Herbie with much love respect and admiration.”
