It does not get any easier for the San Francisco 49ers. After their most embarrassing loss of the season and perhaps the worst of the Kyle Shanahan era, there is injury to add to the insult.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, right tackle Mike McGlinchey, who left in the first half of Sunday’s 31-17 loss and did not return, has suffered a season—ending torn quadricep.

The injury comes as McGlinchey was in the midst of a resurgent season, following what was likely his worst in 2020.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game that while veteran Tom Compton replaced McGlinchey on the right side in the game, Jaylon Moore would get an opportunity to rep there if it was an extended absence for McGlinchey. Moore is accustomed to the left side.

It’s yet unclear what McGlinchey’s recovery timeline will look like, but he had his fifth-year option picked up worth $10.88 million for next season. Amidst a season which becomes more exasperating by the moment, the loss of McGlinchey is another blow in that consistently negative direction.
