Andrew Woolfolk, saxophonist for the legendary Earth, Wind & Fire, has died at the age of 71.
Lead singer Philip Bailey shared the news on Instagram, revealing that Woolfolk had battled illness for several years.
Woolfolk was one of EW&F’s ‘original nine’ members, after meeting Bailey in high school. He was known for his show-stopping saxophone solos during the band’s live shows – and also played flute and percussion.
He remained with the band until 1993, and also recorded with artists like Phil Collins. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame alongside the rest of EW&F in 2000.
Would Earth, Wind & Fire have been the same without Woolfolk? Why is the horn section always such a huge part of a live show?
