On October 28, just hours after learning that Jerry Lee Lewis had died at the age of 87, Bob Dylan paid tribute to the rock pioneer during a show in Nottingham, England.
The tribute came after Dylan’s regular set, according to his Facebook page. After leaving the stage for several minutes, Dylan returned and told the crowd.
“I don’t know how many of you know, but Jerry Lee’s gone,” said Dylan while on stage. “We’re gonna play this song, one of his. Jerry Lee will live forever – we all know that.”
He then launched into “I Can’t Seem to Say Goodbye,” which Lewis recorded in 1969. The track peaked at number 7 on the Billboard country chart.
The salute didn’t mark the first time Dylan and Lewis swapped songs. In 1979, Lewis covered the Dylan song “Rita May” for his self-titled album.
Lewis’ death was formally confirmed on Friday morning after false reports of the 87-year-old’s passing spread earlier this week.
