Jerry Garcia’s Pipe Takes Long, Strange Trip

A pipe that once belonged to Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia is in an antique shop.

When Garcia tried to get clean after years of drugs, he gifted a marijuana pipe to a fellow musician. Now, the handmade pipe has resurfaced in a Los Angeles antique shop.

Steve Cabella, owner of the Modern i Shop in San Anselmo, says, “My shop is fun and a lot of fun stuff walks in the door. But when this walked in the door, it was simply one of the more interesting things that [has come in].”

“I’ve bought party pipes from rock people before,” Cabella told Rolling Stone. “This is a different object. It’s sort of a holy grail in a lot of ways, because, obviously, when [Jerry] was smoking this pipe he was playing music at the time and that was where he was getting the spirit from — the creativity from.”

Cabella hopes to donate the pipe to a museum.
