Metallica’s ‘St. Anger’ Makes ‘Horrible Albums’ List

These days, it seems Metallica can do no wrong. However, that wasn’t always the case, as evidenced by Rolling Stone’s just-released “50 Genuinely Horrible Albums by Brilliant Artists.”

The rock publication lists Metallica’s 2003 album St. Anger among its genuinely horrible picks, calling the album “deeply disappointing.”

The article goes on to complain that “the songs are unfocused and seemingly unfinished,” admonishes James Hetfield for his “straight-from-rehab lyrics” and even rips into Lars Ulrich for sounding “like he’s banging on a tin can throughout the entire album.”

Although Rolling Stone has plenty to say about the album, the criticism that most bothers Ulrich is the one directed at his snare drum.

“That was on purpose,” he says. “It wasn’t like we put it out and somebody went, ‘Whoa! Whoops!’ I view St. Anger as an isolated experiment.”
