This is a big one.
The 49ers are always prioritizing the defensive line, and this offseason is no different. According to ESPN, San Francisco has signed former Eagles Pro Bowl defensive tackle Javon Hargrave to a four-year deal. The deal is reportedly worth $84 million and $40 million guaranteed.
Hargrave, 30, is an excellent interior pass rusher, sacking the quarterback 11 times in 2022, fourth among all DTs in the NFL last year. In his seven NFL seasons — four with the Steelers, three with the Eagles — he’s complied 37.5 sacks. He was considered the top defensive tackle on the market and was a Pro Bowler in 2021.
Hargrave will slot next to Arik Armstead at defensive tackle, meaning Javon Kinlaw’s status as a future starter for the 49ers is probably no longer realistic, barring injury. The 49ers are also in the market for another defensive end opposite Nick Bosa. It remains to be seen if they will re-sign Charles Omenihu, looks elsewhere, or potentially do both.
For depth purposes, San Francisco also re-signed defensive tackle Kevin Givens to a one-year deal worth $2.1 million, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.
