Irish singer Sinead O’Connor has died at 56, according to her family.

In a statement, the singer’s family said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad.

“Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

She was best known for her single Nothing Compares 2 U, released in 1990, which went on to hit number one around the world.

Her 1987 debut album “The Lion and the Cobra” achieved gold status and earned a Grammy nomination for best female vocal rock performance.

She is best known for her single “Nothing Compares 2 U” from her second album “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got.” The song, which was originally written by Prince, was released in 1990 and went on to hit number one around the world. “Nothing Compares 2 U” earned O’Connor two Grammy nominations – record of the year and best female vocal rock performance. “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got” won the 1991 Grammy for best alternative music performance.

O’Connor is survived by her three children. Her son, Shane, died by suicide in January 2022 at age 17.
