If there’s anyone who understands uncomfortable quarterback situations, especially in the 49ers’ QB room, it’s Jimmy Garoppolo.
The former longtime 49ers quarterback weighed in on the team’s trade of Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a 2024 fourth-round draft pick. He said he’s pulling for Lance, but that the situation was “weird.”
“Weird situation,” Garoppolo said. “But a lot of weird situations over there in San Francisco, just leave it at that. But you know, I’m happy Trey get another shot man, happy he’s getting to Dallas, gets another opportunity. Hopefully things work out there.
“But you know, this is a weird league. Everyone has a different story how they get to places, myself included in that just, it’s never a straight line. There’s always going to be bumps in the road. Some things you got to overcome, and I think Trey’s made of the right stuff. He’s a good dude, love that guy. He’s a brother to me, so I’m always pulling for him.”
Garoppolo was asked what he thought of the way the 49ers have handled quarterback situations.
Garoppolo laughed, asking interviewer Robin Lundberg for his own thoughts. Lundberg said he thought it’s been “messy.”
Garoppolo seemed to agree.
“Messy, that’s a nice way to put it,” Garoppolo said. “It is what it is. As a player, you gotta make the best of your situation. We’re all dealt with different situations, weird situations, whatever it may be, but it’s how you come out of it makes you a better person in the end.”
Lundberg also mentioned the praise Garoppolo got from Kyle Shanahan this offseason, when Shanahan said that Garoppolo was likely the best quarterback the 49ers have had since Steve Young.
“It’s really cool,” Garoppolo said. “That’s cool to hear, with the lineage of quarterbacks the Niners have put out just to even be mentioned in that sentence. That’s pretty cool.”
The 49ers, of course, will see the Cowboys later this season. They’ll host them on October 8, when Lance will return to Levi’s Stadium.
