Tony Iommi Makes Surprise Appearance During Debut of Black Sabbath Ballet

A ballet set to the music of Black Sabbath premiered over the weekend – with a special guest appearance by Tony Iommi.

The guitarist attended the performance in his hometown of Birmingham, UK, and took the stage at the end of the night to play guitar on “Paranoid”.

In March, Iommi confirmed he was working on the music for the show, and in September the guitarist shared he was proud to have the group’s music reimagined in such a unique new way.

“[Lead composer Christopher Austin] came over to my house and played me his ideas. It was great to see someone else’s impression of what we did. I was wondering how they would do it – would they just play our songs as we did them? And of course, they don’t. There are little parts of us, then an interlude, then back in with another riff.” He explained, “I’ve heard loads of different versions of our music – accordions, everything. You name it, I’ve heard it. But this is really great.”

After his surprise appearance, Iommi said that he won’t be part of every show, but was “honoured to be involved with these talented dancers.”
