More than two years after he pulled his music from the streaming service, Neil Young is returning to Spotify.
Making the announcement Tuesday on his Neil Young Archives website, the singer-guitarist said he decided to return because he feels other streaming services are just as bad as Spotify. “My decision comes as music services Apple and Amazon have started serving the same disinformation podcast features I had opposed at Spotify,” his statement reads. “I cannot just leave Apple and Amazon, like I did Spotify, because my music would have very little streaming outlet to music lovers at all. So I have returned to Spotify, in sincere hopes that Spotify’s sound quality will improve and people will be able to hear and feel all the music as we made it.”
In January 2022, Young published an open letter to Spotify, asking the service to pull his entire catalog because he was upset over the spread of vaccination misinformation on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. Spotify has since ended its exclusive contract with Rogan.
