WrestleMania 33 Results and Review

On Sunday, April 2nd, the WWE hosted WrestleMania 33 from the Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

Below is a list of the results from the matches at WreslteMania 33.

On the pre-show:

1. Neville (c) defeated Austin Aries (Singles match for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship)

2. Mojo Rawley won by last eliminating Jinder Mahal (33-man battle royal for the Andre The Giant Memorial Trophy)

3. Dean Ambrose (c) defeated Baron Corbin (Singles match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship)

On the main show:

4. AJ Styles defeated Shane McMahon (Singles match)

5. Kevin Owens defeated Chris Jericho (c) (Singles match for the WWE United States Championship)

6. Bayley (c) defeated Charlotte Flair, Nia Jax and Sasha Banks (Fatal four-way elimination match for the WWE Raw Women’s Championship)

7. The Hardy Boyz (Matt hardy and Jeff Hardy) defeated Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson (c), Cesaro and Sheamus and Enzo Amore and Big Cass (Fatal four-way tag team ladder match for the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship)

8. John Cena and Nikki Bella defeated The Miz and Maryse (mixed tag team match)

9. Seth Rollins defeated Triple H (with Stephanie McMahon) (Non-sanctioned match)

10. Randy Orton defeated Bray Wyatt (c) (Singles match for the WWE Championship)

11. Brock Lesnar (with Paul Heyman) defeated Goldberg (c) (Singles match for the WWE Universal Championship)

12. Naomi defeated Alexa Bliss (c), Becky Lynch, Carmella (with James Ellsworth), Mickie James and Natalya (Six-pack challenge for the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship)

13. Roman Reigns defeated The Undertaker (No Holds Barred match)

Baby Huey’s review of WrestleMania 33:

The biggest wrestling show of the year came and went this past Sunday, April 2nd. WrestleMania 33 was at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida to a crowd of over 75,000 people. WrestleMania is the Super Bowl of professional wrestling. Like any hardcore wrestling fan, I was so amped up for this event. This past Sunday, all eyes were on the WWE with a stacked card of matches and fans were eager to see what surprises were in store. WrestleMania is known for creating special moments that have fans, press and social media talking. Here’s my review of the show.

The kickoff show started two hours before the main card began and had three matches of their own to get through. Neville battled Austin Aries for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship. While these guys had the tough task of starting the day off, they did a solid job of getting the crowd pumped up for the show. A lot of fans were upset this matched was scheduled for the kickoff show and not the main show, however, based on their match, WWE made the right call.

Next up was the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal. Going into this match there were a handful of favorites, Braun Strowman, Big Show and Sami Zayn seemed like the favorites but I was very surprised that Braun and Big Show were eliminated very early. In general I like battle royal type matches, the chaos and wrestlers gaining up on another trying to throw each other out of the ring. My main problem with the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal is besides winning a trophy, what else do you get? Bragging rights? Giving WWE Commentators something extra to talk about during the winning wrestler matches for the next year? I feel this match needs more value and something needs to be up for grabs. I think a shot at a championship of their choosing. Mojo Rawley ended up winning with the help of his best friend New England Patriots Tight End Rob Gronkowski, which can viewed as a publicity stunt to get WrestleMania some love during Sportscenter and other sports outlets. This match should be use to give their top guys a big push, with that being said I hope with this win Mojo Rawley will get a big singles push on SmackDown Live. Only time will tell.

Last match from the kickoff show was Dean Ambrose and Baron Corbin for the Intercontinental Championship. It was quick brawler match, wasn’t completely smooth. A type of match you would see on a random Tuesday night during SmackDown Live. I really thought Baron was going to win and win his first title on the main roster since he got called up a year ago after winning last year’s battle royal. I hope Baron wins a title in the near future. I want to see him succeed and become a big threat to his fellow peers.

The first match on the main show was a surprise between AJ Styles and Shane McMahon. Going into this match a lot of fans were bummed that AJ was wrestling Shane instead of a legit wrestler on the roster. Overall this match was a lot better than I think most people expected. Over the years when Shane McMahon wrestles it’s some sort of gimmick match to cover up the fact he doesn’t wrestle full time but to his credit he held his own in this match. The real life Crash Test Dummy, Shane put his body on the line and attempted some big moves. Also, AJ once again proved he can make anyone look good in the ring. However, when they were rolling around on the mat, it looked like AJ was more playing around with him instead of struggling back and forth. I enjoyed both of them taunting each other.

The Kevin Owens versus Chris Jericho match for the US Championship did a great job setting up heat between the two. Former best friends now bitter enemies, you would think with that premise both of them would pull out every crazy move in the book to put an end to the other guy. We didn’t get that. Instead they did a lot of back and forth moves but nothing out of the ordinary that we haven’t seen on an episode of Raw. I wish the match went a little longer so they could have establish more false finishes to really add emotion that neither guy is giving up so easily and it’s going to take everything they got to win, especially if you want to destroy you’re former best friend. I did love the return of Jericho’s countdown before his entrance and the huge list.

The fatal four way for the Raw Women’s Championship started off strong, all the women had big entrances to the ring. I liked seeing Bayley, Sasha and Charlotte all attacking Nia Jax and working together to eliminate her first. Nia Jax looks like a huge threat for months to come. Since Bayley won and kept her title, I just wished they would have done things differently leading up to WrestleMania. February’s Fastlane pay per view really screwed up the momentum for this match. At Fastlane we saw Charlottle end her undefeated pay per view winning streak. I wish Bayley never won the Raw title before WrestleMania, instead position her as the biggest underdog and so when she wins her first title at WrestleMania, it would have been extra special and Charlottle’s streak ends at WrestleMania, so you accomplish an exciting finale to two storylines.

It was great seeing The Hardy Boyz make a surprise return for the fatal four-way tag team ladder match for the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship. I cheered out loud when their music hit. That was a bigger surprise than anything we saw at Royal Rumble. Give the Hardy Boyz credit for competing for another promotion the night before and in today’s world of the internet and social media, it felt like the 90’s when a wrestler would jump from one promotion to another and be a total surprise. I got goosebumps. The ladder match was a lot of fun. Everyone involved throwing their bodies around. Unfortunately, from this point on the rest of WrestleMania began to decline.

The mixed tag team match between John Cena and Nikki Bella against The Miz and Maryse was nothing special, very basic moves and the ending was predictable, the main focus of this match was John Cena’s proposal to Nikki Bella.

Next up was Triple H versus Seth Rollings. Triple H had another fun entrance, driving down the ramp in a three wheeled motorcycle with Stephanie McMahon standing on the back. Triple H looked badass, his outfit shows his love for Motorhead. I gotta give Seth Rollins credit for selling that match. Triple H bodywise still looks great but moves a lot slower now and Seth was key in selling that knee injury. The match could have been shorter. Also, I got to hand it to Stephanie McMahon for taking a bump into a table.

The WWE Championship match between Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton was anti-climatic. Bray tried playing mind games by flashing images of maggots and other bugs onto the mat but the trick didn’t really seem to effective. Randy won, no pun intended, did an RKO out of nowhere to become the new champ.

A simple match between Brock Lesnar and Bill Goldberg. The match almost went 5 minutes which was perfect length, not too long to overstay their welcome. I loved how each guy just went for power move after power move against each other. Finally, Brock was able to defeat Goldberg to become the new WWE Universal Champion. To do so, Brock had to overcome four spears and a Jackhammer, but Lesnar also delivered 10 German suplexes and a big F-5 for the win. Brock also had a pulled off a leapfrog to avoid a fifth spear.

I felt bad for the SmackDown Live Women’s title match, it was last minute and cut short to hurry up and end the pay per view. Every female wrestler got a chance to pull off a big spot before the match had to come to a quick end. I was happy to see hometown girl Naomi win back the title she had to vacate due to injury a couple months ago. I felt this match would have been better left on the kickoff show to give them more time.

After a two hour kickoff show and the main show approaching five hours in length, we come to the final match between The Undertaker and Roman Reigns. Between Roman Reigns limited offensive moves and The Undertaker looking very old and not the wrestler he used to be, this match was tough to watch. Both did their best to tell a story, an older man unwilling to give up and rather take a beating instead. Roman finally pinned The Undertaker, marking Taker’s only second WrestleMania lost ever. After the match Taker left his gloves, jacket and hat in the ring as he walked away from the ring. Everyone assumes this was a sign The Undertaker will be retiring now. Except for Undertaker’s send off, this match should not have been the last match. Great hearing Jim Ross call it though. My thought afterwards was where does Roman Reigns go from here? Roman defeated The Undertaker and everyone now has another reason to hate him even more. If you have a guy you view as your babyface of the future who gets booed more than cheered, having him beat an all-time legend into retirement isn’t going to make that situation better. Period. Thank you Undertaker for all the years of entertainment you provide for us wrestling fans. If this truly is his last match, my guess he will be going into the WWE Hall of Fame next year at WrestleMania 34 in New Orleans. Rumor is the main event for WreslteMania 34 will be Brock Lesnar versus Roman Reigns, which should be interesting considering now we can say both guys have the bragging right of beating Undertaker at WrestleMania.

Overall, WrestleMania represents why I love watching professional wrestling. Big setup, lots of pyro and flashing lights, fun entrances, surprise returns, high flying moves, big spots and emotional story telling. At the end of the day, what happened during the show got people talking and that my friend is the key on keeping your company popular and constantly relevant.
