This past Tuesday night I went to the legendary Warfield Theatre in San Francisco to see one of the biggest metal/hard rock bands of the last 15 years, Mastodon.
Mastodon is our touring in support of their seventh album “Emperor of Sand,” which is out now. Going to see Mastodon live in concert is always a fun yet interesting experience. As soon as the band hits the stage and play the opening notes for “Sultan’s Curse” the room immediately filled up with smoke as the crowd self medicated in order to get in the right mood to enjoy a Mastodon concert.
If you are a hardcore fan of Mastodon then you would have loved their setlist on this particular night. Mastodon didn’t play a lot of their “radio friendly” songs from the last couple of album, but instead played a lot of deeper tracks that the crowd seemed to enjoy more. The band went into one song after another with not a lot of talk in between. There was a lot of head banging from the crowd but I laughed when Mastodon started playing their current single “Show Yourself” the crowd stopped head banging and just starred at the band (I love the single, but I guess for most of the people in the room, they didn’t think it was heavy enough).
As seen in my videos below, it was a psychedelic light show, a lot of bright colors that were constantly shaped shifting into different objects.
I always love seeing Mastodon live, they are one of those bands that seem to appeal to a lot of people. They sounded great and heavy as always. I wished they did play some more of their hard rock/radio friendly singles, but overall it was still a fun night out.
