Baby Huey’s Movie Review For Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Here’s the premise for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Captain Jack Sparrow is pursued by an old nemesis, Armando Salazar, who along with his Spanish Navy ghost crew has escaped from the Devil’s Triangle and is determined to kill every pirate at sea. Jack, aided by his new allies Henry and Carina, must seek the Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that grants its possessor total control over the seas, in order to defeat Salazar.

Can you believe this is 5th installment in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise? Starting back with The Curse of the Black Pearl n 2003, Dead Man’s Chest on 2006, At World’s End n 2007, On Stranger Tides in 2011 and now Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017.

My advice before seeing this movie is make sure you are caught up and have seen the previous 4 movies. I think this is important so you don’t feel lost and you know what every character are up to.

Johnny Depp is back as everyone’s favorite Pirate Captain Jack Sparrow. Javier Bardem joins the cast as Captain Armando Salazar.

This is the best Pirates of the Caribbean movie since the first one. I love that this movie is focused on following the cast go through a fun adventure. This is a movie the entire family can go and enjoy together.

Johnny Depp delivers another fun and goofy performance as Jack Sparrow, at this point, he has done this character so many times, I’m it is second hand nature for him to turn into this character on cue. I bet he feels like he’s turning into this character in real life, lol. When we first met Jack Sparrow in the original movie, Johnny Depp portrayed the character as a goofy clown but at the same time we know on the switch of a dime can turn into someone you don’t want to mess with, in the sequels he became more goofy and less serious, in this movie we go back to basics and see both sides of his personality again.

We all know Javier Bardem is a tremendous actor and was a great choice for the villain but I was hoping we would see him more in the movie, however, when he did show up, he will capture your attention.

Geoffrey Rush returns as Captain Hector Barbossa and while his role in the movie was limiting, he also put on a solid performance for what was given to him.

Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smyth, is the new female lead in this movie and I felt she was the new best character in this franchise.

Brenton Thwaites plays Henry Turner, who is the son of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, and he looks just like Orlando Bloom, great casting choice. Great setup in this film of his character looking for his Dad and wanting to break the curse his Dad is under.

At the same time, for you hardcore Pirates of the Caribbean fans, don’t expect a lot of screen time for Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley.

Also, Paul McCartney had a very funny cameo in this movie.

While this is a live action movie, at times, with the over the top stunts, it felt like a Disney cartoon. Even Jack Sparrow was his usual over the top, goofy personality, but at times he looked like a cartoon character.

Overall, I really enjoyed the movie, despite feeling long, it’s about two hours, I was still entertain the whole time. I loved how visually it felt very bright and vibrant and the special effects were amazing, especially how they made the ghosts look real and what happened in the third act of the movie. Also, the music in the movie really help set the tones in every scene. This franchise seems to be back on track because it felt like an adventure again.

I would rate the film: 6/10

By the way, just for fun, whenever I hear or read the title for this movie I think of Motorhead’s song “Dead Men Tell No Tales.” Lemmy Kilmister would have been a badass Pirate.
