Prehistoric predator named after Lemmy Kilmister

Late Motörhead frontman.Lemmy Kilmister would be proud to know scientists recently named the prehistoric crocodile Lemmysuchus obtusidens after him.

The prehistoric crocodile was dug up in the 20th century near Peterborough, Cambridgeshire in England. The monstrous croc skeleton had around a three-foot long head and was nearly 20 feet long. After it was incorrectly categorized with other crocs found at the same location, museum curator Lorna Steel suggested a name of the re-classified predator:

Although Lemmy passed away at the end of 2015, we’d like to think that he would have raised a glass to Lemmysuchus, one of the nastiest sea creatures to have ever inhabited the Earth.

Lemmysuchus obtusidens patrolled the shallow waters in the Middle Jurassic Period (about 164 million years ago), preying on animals in the coastal area of what would become modern-day Europe.

Scientists also say that the croc was an apex predator and “would have been one of the biggest coastal predators of its time.
