SANTA CLARA – Take a breath, 49ers fans. Now, take one more. Both Nick Bosa and Jason Verrett have reportedly avoided serious injuries suffered in Wednesday’s practice, according to Ian Rapoport.
Bosa went down after a run play by Tevin Coleman which was stopped near the line of scrimmage. He grabbed his right ankle and was attended to for the next four plays on the ground, just behind the play, before getting up and limping off the field. After practice, defensive coordinator Robert Saleh expressed a sense of relative calm about Bosa.
“I think he’s alright,” Saleh said. “Still haven’t heard from the performance staff, but I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.”
Saleh’s instincts were correct, as Rapoport confirmed Bosa sustained an ankle sprain, and hinted that Bosa, who Saleh said he was “very excited” about, may not see more action in the preseason (whether that means all of the preseason or just preseason games will come into focus sooner rather than later).
#49ers first-round pick DE Nick Bosa was diagnosed with just an ankle sprain, I’m told. He had an MRI after practice. Expect the team to be cautious with their top pick, meaning you may not see him in the preseason.

The same diagnosis held for cornerback Jason Verrett, who obviously has an extensive injury history, and stopped taking 11-on-11 snaps fairly early in practice. He has played just five games over the past three seasons, tearing his Achilles in conditioning tests before the start of last season with the Los Angeles Chargers.
At this point in camp, Verrett has been battling Ahkello Witherspoon (who returned on Tuesday after two days out with a glute issue) for the second starting corner spot, and it might just come down to who’s healthiest when the season starts to take that job (don’t expect one of them to be sidelined for too long if both are healthy when the season starts, there will likely be plenty of platoon work).
More good news for the #49ers: CB Jason Verrett also has a minor ankle sprain, following his MRI, I’m told. A sigh of relief there.
