John Lynch breaks news again, announces 49ers have re-signed Jason Verrett

The man really misses being a media member, apparently. After general manager John Lynch broke the news—perhaps a few hours early and after a few adult beverages, according to CEO Jed York—that the 49ers would be signing fullback Kyle Juszczyk, he did it again on Monday, announcing the 49ers had re-signed standout cornerback Jason Verrett.

The news was reported just a few seconds earlier than Lynch by ESPN’s Josina Anderson. John got scooped.

San Francisco bought low on Verrett, swinging on the Pro Bowl upside that he displayed with the Chargers before an unbelievable, devastating series of injuries saw him sidelined essentially for four-straight seasons. But in 2020, Verrett was a veritable shutdown corner, and in a season damned by injuries, he was one of the few, reliable bright spots.

That long wait has finally paid dividends, as Verrett, who will be 30 at the start of the season, has signed a one-year, up to $6.5 million deal, with a $5.5 million base. According to Ian Rapoport, Verrett turned down a multi-year offer in favor of the opportunity to prove himself again in 2021 and potentially cash in for a larger payday in a less cap-constricted market.

With the Juszczyk and Verrett re-signings, the 49ers have locked in two of their three key names. The third? Trent Williams, who is headed to free agency with the Kansas City Chiefs and Indianapolis Colts reportedly also interested (and surely many others). Williams, though, has expressed he’d prefer to remain with the 49ers if the money isPhoto by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images) right.
