Metallica’s Kirk Hammett says he wanted ‘Enter Sandman’ to be the next ‘Smoke On The Water’

YouTube, @Metallica.

Kirk Hammet probably never had anything to worry about when it came to the success of “Enter Sandman.”

“I sat down and I said to myself, as I always do, ‘I want to write the next ‘Smoke On The Water’,’ And I just started messing around,” Hammet said in an interview with Guitar World.

It wasn’t just Deep Purple that inspired him, though.

“I got the swing kind of feel going, and then I was thinking of Soundgarden and how they were using dropped tunings,” Hammett revealed.

Can you hear any other artists’ influences in Metallica’s music? What do you think is Metallica’s version of “Smoke on the Water?”
