Mike McGlinchey is baffled by the constant criticism of Jimmy G

Jimmy Garoppolo was pretty darn good at the end of San Francisco’s come-from-behind victory over the Bengals on Sunday, especially on the game winning drive in overtime when he went 6-for-6 with a touchdown.

Garoppolo is playing some of his best ball of the season as the 49ers seem to be peaking, so why is there still so much criticism surrounding the 49ers quarterback? Offensive lineman Mike McGlinchey was asked that very question by Lamont and Tonelli on Thursday, and was as baffled as they are.

“Honestly, I have no idea,” McGlinchey said on 107.7 The Bone. “I really don’t. There are a lot of guys in the NFL where it’s so hot and cold. It gets to the point where there’s certain guys in the league that are so successful for so long, the perception is they’ve never screwed up or they can do no wrong, so the problem has to be somewhere else. Then there’s guys on the opposite end of that, no matter how good you do or how well you play for as consistent as it is, you can’t win over the media, can’t win over the fan base.

“I don’t know what Jimmy has done to cause such scrutiny…He’s won three times as many games as he’s lost, and I just don’t understand it.

“On top of it, he’s a great guy, a great citizen, and does a lot for the Bay Area. For whatever reason, people are just waiting for someone else. I guess it’s just the grass is always greener type of thing. But we’d be lost without Jimmy Garoppolo for sure.”
