Google Engineer Says AI Bot Has Become Sentient

It’s like a scene pulled straight out of a sci-fi movie: a scientist convinced an AI program has come to life, while his employer shuts him down.

Google engineer Blake Lemoine says the company’s AI chatbot ‘LaMDA’ has gained sentience, based on conversations he’s had with the bot about topics like religion, rights, and ‘personhood’. He compared LaMDA’s personality to an “8-year-old kid that happens to know physics”.

However, Google has dismissed Lemoine’s claims and put him on administrative leave for violating confidentiality.

Do you think it’s possible for an AI program to gain sentience?
