Jimmy Garoppolo to stay with 49ers on restructured one-year deal [report]

Jimmy Garoppolo will remain a member of the San Francisco 49ers.

Despite the organization moving on to Trey Lance as its starting quarterback and the team openly seeking to trade Garoppolo, no trade materialized after he underwent shoulder surgery this offseason.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, in a bombshell report on Monday, Garoppolo will be staying with the 49ers in 2022, on a restructured one-year deal.

Not only does the deal keep Garoppolo with the 49ers, but it contains a no-trade and no-tag clause, meaning if he is traded at a later date, he’d have his pick, and the team can’t franchise tag him after this season.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Garoppolo’s base salary decreased from the previous $24.2 million figure to a fully guaranteed $6.5 million figure. If he ends up starting, there are up to $10 million in incentives.

The 49ers, stubborn as they are, refused to give Garoppolo up for nothing but salary relief. If he doesn’t reach his incentives, the team will save around $18 million in camp space with the move, and will save roughly $10 million at minimum, even if he reaches all his incentives.

It is a stunning move after Garoppolo was completely uninvolved in team meetings this entire preseason, and worked off on the side to ramp back up after his shoulder surgery.

Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch embraced an uncomfortable situation last year, and they’re doubling down again. Here we go, folks.
