The Beach Boys’ Mike Love Commends the Beatles

Co-founder of The Beach Boys, Mike Love, praised the Beatles in his memoir, “Good Vibrations,” for their expertise in marketing and merchandising.

“What is often overlooked about the Beatles is how smart they were in their marketing, merchandising, and publicity — and in that regard, they ran circles around us for the next several years,” Love explained in the book.

Love also discussed the Beatles’ influence as one of the first British bands to achieve significant success in the US. He added that the band knew how to utilize their commercial value in a way that the Beach Boys did not.

Would you agree that part of being a great musical artist is knowing how to “sell” yourself? Why or why not?
