Purdy reveals what Shanahan said to him after questionable scramble at end of first half

Kyle Shanahan appeared to give Brock Purdy an earful late in the first half of Sunday’s game vs. the Cowboys, when the rookie quarterback almost let the clock run out before San Francisco could kick a field goal.

With seven seconds left and the ball at Dallas’ 32-yard-line, Purdy elected to scramble as the time ticked away, eventually throwing the ball out of bounds with just a second left. As the play evolved, Shanahan was about five yards out onto the field, screaming at Purdy to throw the ball away. When Purdy did finally make his way to the sideline, Shanahan covered his mouth with his play sheet as he delivered a message to his QB.

After the game, Purdy reveled what Shanahan said, or at least what the message was.

“‘You just gotta be better,'” Purdy said his coach told him. “‘I told you if it’s not there, throw it away.’ I thought I had a little bit more time, look left, look right, just made it close.”

“I looked left, our read was covered,” Purdy explained. “I thought I had a little bit more time than I had, looking right to Deebo. And obviously it was a pretty close call. I just gotta be better if it’s not there, throw the ball away. He coached me up and got on me, rightfully so.”

When Shanahan was asked about it, he kept things closer to the vest.

“That’s why I had my play sheet over my face,” Shanahan said with a chuckle when asked what he said. “It just got a little close for us, with the time. Just wanted him to throw it away a hair earlier.”

Did he yell at Purdy?

“No, I never yell.”

Not sure that one will pass the polygraph test, coach.
