Eddie Van Halen’s ‘Hot For Teacher’ Guitar Sells for Almost $4 Million

The Kramer CO176 guitar that Eddie Van Halen played in the video for “Hot For Teacher” has a new owner.

The starting bid for the guitar was $1,800,000 and was expected to fetch between $2-3 million. However, it actually sold for $3,932,000.

It is now one of the five most expensive guitars ever sold at auction. Kurt Cobain’s MTV Unplugged Guitar is number one at $6,010,000.

According to Sotheby’s, the poplar wood guitar was custom-made by Paul Unkert of Kramer Guitars for Eddie Van Halen. From 1983 and 1984 it was one of Eddie’s main guitars until Alan Holdsworth introduced Eddie to basswood. The guitar was previously gifted to the band’s drum tech, Gregg Emerson, in 1990, and before the sale belonged to a collector in Huntington Beach, CA.

See the guitar in the music video below.
