Stevie Nicks Reveals She Once Turned Down a Chance to Duet With Prince

The song “Purple Rain” proved to be a monster success for Prince, earning the late artist an Oscar for Best Original Music Score. But the song could have sounded a lot different than it does – had Stevie Nicks not rejected an invitation to duet with Prince on the track.

The former Fleetwood Mac singer says Prince sent her a copy of “Purple Rain’s” instrumental track, asking if she’d share lead vocal duties with him.

“It was so overwhelming,” she recalls. “I listened to it and I just got scared. I called him back and said, ‘I can’t do it. I wish I could. It’s too much for me.’ I’m so glad that I didn’t, because he wrote it, and it became ‘Purple Rain.’”

Although Nicks admits she still listens to the instrumental track Prince sent her from time to time, she says she doesn’t regret her decision. In fact, she says she was “thrilled” when it became a big hit.
