The news of Sinéad O’Connor’s death at the age of 56 has shaken the music industry, prompting several of the Irish singer’s peers to express their remorse online.

A tweet posted to Garbage’s band account reads, “I am heartbroken,” and Jason Isbell writes, “I hope there’s peace for Sinéad.” Boy George says he’s “devastated” over the news, while Melissa Etheridge adds, “This is such a tragedy. What a loss. She was haunted all her life. What a talent.”

And rapper/actor Ice T tweets, “Respect to Sinéad. She stood for something, unlike most people. Rest Easy.”

Even non-music types are paying tribute to O’Connor. Irish poet Seamus Heaney writes, “A great Irish poet and singer left us today. She was beautiful, courageous and wore her heart on her sleeve. She was before her time. Nothing will ever compare to Sinéad O’Connor. Rest easy, Sinéad.”

Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan described O’Connor as “Fiercely honest and sweet and funny, she was talented in ways I’m not sure she completely understood. But Sinead stands alone as a figure from our generation who was always true to the piercing voice within and without
And for that I will always admire and respect her. And never forget that she was once cancelled for an act of simple resistance. Her crime? Tearing up a photo”
