How Dimebag Darrell Inspired Kirk Hammett

Pantera and Metallica shared something of a rivalry during the 90’s – but Kirk Hammett says guitarist Dimebag Darrell was an inspiration in at least one way.

Hammett says Darrell’s signature wah pedal – the ‘DB01B Dimebag Cry Baby From Hell Wah’ – is his go-to in the studio.

He told YouTuber Rick Beato “I break it out every single time I go into the studio” – even though Hammett has his own signature Cry Baby model. When Hammett was making his own pedal, he looked to Darrell for inspiration.

“When I was looking at this wah, I thought, ‘This is the wah that I should’ve made,” he explains. “And when Dunlop said, ‘Let’s put out your version of the wah,’ I wanted to copy it. But I didn’t out of respect for Dimebag. But that’s the wah for me — it’s the Dimebag wah. It’s the greatest wah, for me, that’s ever been fucking made.”

Kirk also expressed his personal fondness for Dimebag: “I loved him as a guy; I loved him as a person; I loved him as a player”.
