Lamont & Tonelli interviewed Kirk Hammett from Metallica to discuss how Hammett got Peter Green’s guitar, the 72 Seasons tour, and more!

They say never meet your heroes, but in Kirk Hammett’s case, that’s not always true. When Metallica performed at Candlestick Park Hammett wanted to meet Lamont and Tonelli.

“Kirk, it really blew my mind because I was like, holy crap, you want to talk to us? So we were escorted underneath Candlestick and met you in your dressing room.” Lamont explained, “To this day, that has stuck with me and I appreciate it… [it’s] one of my all-time favorite moments, and I just want to thank you for that. You’re a good dude.”

Hammett remembers the moment well and replied, “Your radio station…The Bone means so much to me and all my friends because you guys play the music that we still like to hear, you know, end of story.”

Hammett then explained the journey from first playing on a Montgomery Ward guitar, to touring guitars, and now owning “One of the best Les Paul’s out there.”

The guitar in question – Peter Green’s 1959 Gibson Les Paul – ranks so highly because Green, the founder of Fleetwood Mac, previously owned it and “used it to write and record amazing songs like Black Magic Woman.” After multiple sellers and collectors, the guitar now remains in Hammett’s hands.

Hammett talks about how much he paid for Peter Green’s guitar, Kirk Hammett Fear FestEvil, his side project known as The Wedding Band, and more! Listen to their complete conversation below.
