Here’s How Metallica’s ‘Enter Sandman’ Almost Didn’t Happen

Believe it or not, one of the most popular rock and metal songs of all time almost never happened.

According to Metallica frontman James Hetfield, the world was close to never hearing “Enter Sandman.”

In a clip from Hetfield’s interview with “Masterclass,” he revealed that he wasn’t a huge fan of the song until drummer Lars Ulrich and producer Bob Rock had him go back and work on it.

“I think Lars Ulrich and Bob Rock said, ‘Go back. I challenge you to go back and work on it. And I did.”

The line “We’re off to never, neverland” is apparently what made the song work for Hetfield.

“What happens in your sleep? Why do we have these certain nightmares?’ – a lot of people could identify with that.” Hetfield continues, “Everyone has nightmares. What do you do with them? Why do they show up?”
