Fire crews and police spent Sunday evening at a Lexington hotel after a gas explosion nearly leveled the building. Several floors were destroyed at the Fairfield Inn and Suites on Lakecrest Circle when police say a driver crashed into the building and hit the gas line. About 60 hotel guests were all evacuated safely, thanks to employees. Firefighters say within 10 minutes from the time of the gas leak, the building exploded. The evacuated guests were relocated to the hotel next door. Then about two hours after the explosion, a large portion of the side of the building collapsed. Two firefighters received some minor injuries. Police say the incident happened after an elderly driver crashed into the side of the building. The driver wasn't hurt in the crash. In fact, he walked to a neighboring hotel and told a clerk what happened. They called the fire department, who helped evacuate the building minutes before the gas ignited and destroyed the building.
