First Board Meeting Since Audit

The Fayette County school board held its first meeting since the release of an audit that highlighted numerous problems within the system. The audit found no criminal wrongdoing in connection with a $20 million accounting error resulting in a budget shortfall. But the auditor found that "chronic mismanagement" – including weak policies, "toxic" inter-office relationships and failed communications – played a role in the district's weakened financial position. The board unanimously approved the working budget after community members and parents voiced their opinions Monday night. Shelton also announced that the budget and staffing office, and financial services office with begin reporting directly to him effective Tuesday.
