DETROIT, March 22, 2022 ~ This week, work began on a three-year project to rebuild a portion of I-96, including adding a flex route that will be available during peak travel hours.
The flex route will utilize the median shoulder as a drivable lane, only open during high-traffic periods, to alleviate congestion on the roadway.
The project will be tackled in three different stages, with each stage focusing on one portion of the road at a time. Traffic will be rerouted accordingly, and changed to accommodate the construction.
760 WJR‘s Paul W. Smith talks to Michigan Department of Transportation Spokeswoman Diane Cross, and Project Manager Brian Travis about the project, and how it will affect commuters over the next three years.
